Thermal Temperature Monitoring Solution FAQ

Can the Dahua Thermal Temperature Monitoring Products be used to detect if a person is infected by virus such as Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

No, the Dahua Thermal Temperature Monitoring Solution cannot be used to detect or diagnose any virus or disease. The Dahua Thermal Temperature Monitoring Solution measures for elevated skin temperature against a user-defined threshold.

Is the Dahua Thermal Temperature Monitoring Solution FDA-cleared or -approved?

The Dahua Thermal Temperature Monitoring Solution is not FDA-cleared or approved. The Solution should not be solely or primarily used to diagnose or exclude a diagnosis of COVID-19 or any other disease. Elevated skin temperature in the context of use should be confirmed with secondary evaluation methods (e.g., an NCIT or clinical grade contact thermometer). Public health officials, through their experience with the Solution in the particular environment of use, should determine the significance of any fever or elevated temperature based on the skin telethermographic temperature measurement. The Solution should be used to measure only one subject’s temperature at a time. Visible thermal patterns are only intended for locating the points from which to extract the thermal measurement.

How does Dahua Temperature Monitoring Technology work?

The Dahua Thermal Temperature Monitoring Solution combines the latest hybrid thermal network camera, a blackbody calibration device, and an NVR to monitor the skin temperature of an individual at a distance.

Hybrid technology combines both thermal and visible light sensors in an integrated package. The thermal sensor provides temperature monitoring, and the visible light sensor provides visual identification. Both streams are fed into the NVR for synchronized recording and playback.

The blackbody device provides a constant reference temperature to assure accurate temperature readings. Competing systems without a reference module won’t have the accuracy, or will require calibration if the ambient temperature changes. A/C units turning on and off, or a gust of wind from an entrance, could easily skew readings, requiring re-calibration.

How does the Dahua Thermal Temperature Monitoring Solution increase efficiency?

The Dahua Thermal Monitoring Solution increases efficiency by using face detection as a filter, allowing only temperature measurement of detected faces and nothing else. This feature helps minimize measurement of non-human heat sources, like a cup of coffee. This feature also allows for measurement even when a face is partially covered by a mask or glasses.

Is the blackbody necessary for each thermal camera? What are the advantages of using a blackbody?

We recommend pairing a blackbody box with each camera for optimal accuracy. A blackbody is a physical body that absorbs all incident electromagnetic radiation. It functions as a calibration tool and becomes a target object with a precisely known and controlled temperature. This precision is the basis for accurate calibration of infrared pyrometers, increasing the accuracy of thermal imaging equipment.

How many thermal cameras can be deployed on the NVR? Is DHI-NVR5216-16P-I the only NVR that works with the Dahua Thermal Body Temperature system?

The new NVR DHI-NVR5216-16P-I supports up to 6 thermal cameras. It also supports 2-channel face detection, 8-channel mask detection, people counting and heat map features.

This is the only NVR that currently supports the Dahua Thermal Temperature Monitoring Solution.

What mounting options do you offer?

Our thermal cameras and blackbody devices can be installed on tripods (VCT-999), wall mounts (DH-PFB129W) and ceiling mounts (DH-PFB120C).

How is accuracy affected by obstructions (e.g., glasses/sunglasses/hats/masks)? Does a subject need to be facing the camera?

Both the eyes and certain areas of the forehead are the hottest areas of the face, and measurement of those areas will produce the most accurate results. So, either unobstructed views of the eyes or forehead is required to produce the most accurate measurement.

The Dahua Thermal Temperature Monitoring Solution requires that the subject face the camera for a temperature reading.

Can you adjust the setting for what temperature triggers the alarm? How do you get an alert when a high body temperature is registered?

Elevated skin temperature is user-defined. You can set whatever threshold you deem appropriate.

Users can configure the Dahua Thermal Temperature Solution to receive alerts (including image and temperature reading) via a mobile app and email. Users can also enable audio-visual alerts on the camera and alerts on the NVR.

Can the cameras stay on all the time? How long do the cameras need to warm up when initially started?

The camera, terminal and blackbody can be powered continuously. In general, an initial warm-up of 30 minutes is required.
